Energetic refurbishment of a bungalow with a partial basement and a gable roof, almost doubling the living space through extensions made with exposed concrete. The extensions span two storeys for bedrooms and recreation areas as well as for an extension of the living room into the garden with a fully glazed facade.
In terms of design, the bungalow remains largely untouched on the side facing the street, integrating into the ensemble of neighbouring buildings. On the garden side, the spacey extensions define a protected and modern situation with differentiated outdoor areas.
Inside, the transition between the existing and new parts is hardly noticeable, but it is all the more evident on the outside. All surfaces and windows are reworked and largely renewed, with adapted formats. Typical elements of a bungalow are deliberately preserved and refurbished or supplemented, such as the mosaic parquet flooring in the living room or the entrance situation with vestibule and typical 1960s front door element ("lantern").
A single-piece steel spiral staircase ("ship's propeller"), which is situated at the point of articulation of the angular floor plan, develops into an eye-catcher in the visual axis from the entrance. The connection between the one-story and two-story areas is brought alive by the light from the upper floor being guided along a wall that runs all the way to the entrance.
Special care was taken regarding the energetic and static upgrading of the 1970s bungalow; The building services were completely renewed - installing a gas condensing boiler with solar thermal support and thus achieving an energetic upgrading according to EnEV 2009 KfW standard 100.
